Relationships that last – Why do some companies become…

Products can become commodities. Only the differentiation of ingredients can change the label. Take bread for instance. It has been around since…Ever! But do you have a favorite bread? It’s still bread!

People like certain brands, grain, yeast, honey, wheat, focaccia, pita, breakfast, dinner, scones, bagels, croutons and hundreds more types/characteristics that define…the amazing tastes of bread. It is probably one of the most broadly defined/described substances on earth. And now it comes in more shapes, flavors, even ‘yeast family’ recipes. Why do some people develop a relationship with a certain type of bread and go back to it every time? Knowledge and trust.

Unlike bread, relationships are slightly more complex. However, just as you have tried some breads over and over and develop a love for that bread – A business relationship can have the same result of knowledge and trust.

When a great team of people in an organization have completed needed tasks repeatedly with a fantastic rate of success – you begin to trust them, and their knowledge of your needs grows with each task. When that same team finds new ways to save you money on your tasks while remaining profitable, so they will be around to help you in the future – That grows the relationship. Knowing the goals of your customer and helping them to achieve them while saving money, can result in a long term relationship. Now go enjoy your morning bagel from the deli that you know and trust.

How do you spell antidisestablishmentarianism? Why proofing your work…

You have spell check, grammar check, a good eye, sense of placement and organization. You’ve got this! Your document is clear, concise, well thought out and displayed beautifully. Your graphic designer killed it!
Your first print from your printer is okay, but your desktop printer is just that, a desk jet. It doesn’t matter, because you know your graphic designer understands all the corporate logo usage and color requirements, so… let’s go to press.

Today, we have so many programs and safety checks that help us, we are simply not concerned when we send something off to a printer. Except… maybe that paper you chose will crack under that heavy blue solid you placed over the fold. And, that drop shadow that didn’t show too well on your desk jet proof comes up very differently from the PDF, to the desk jet to the Heidelberg or the digital press.

PDF versus paper proofing? 80% of the time a PDF for common 1 or 2-sided, simple color card or sheet printing works just fine. It usually suffices for reprints, but when you are folding, binding, die-cutting, critical color matching or stamping, paper is the ticket. Digital paper proofing has become, and can be, invaluable to checking your most critical work.
The top five items to look out for:
1. Consistent logo usage, color and placement
2. Type – widows, odd breaks or shifts
3. Gutter or fold ink coverage/cracking and or need for coatings
4. Images DPI, skin tones, bad crops
5. Proper paper choice for final needs and mailing weight consideration

At Cann Printing, we take extra steps by proofing your work from a craftsman’s perspective. We are not attached to your job in the same way you are, giving us a greater visual print perfection point of view. With hundreds of years’ worth of combined print perfection experience, we catch even potential problems in advance of production, saving you time and money.
And now you know how to spell antidisestablishmentarianism.

Nor’easter Storm, Technical Terms as Related to Printing

  • March 22, 2018March 23, 2018
  • by Don McNeill

As we in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast brace for our 4th Nor’easter of March, we think the rest of the world should learn some terminology regarding these storms as it relates to printing.

White Excrement – This term does not refer to snow alone as a typical Nor’easter blends facial stinging ice fragments that have a unique piercing capability. This generally forces us all to work from home and press operators cannot report to work. Unfortunately, our facility closes.

Freezing Rain – As if rain on a cold day is not depressing enough this unique type of rain has the amazing capability to stick as ice to any surface it contacts. This includes tree branches, power lines, tree branches that bring down power lines and everything that can potentially take down power lines other than tree branches such as whole trees. Without power presses cannot run properly or at all. Our facility closes.

Slippery When Wet – Because it’s not wet…It’s ice! Ice is inherently slippery. When it falls from the sky and coats every surface, everywhere the result is everything becomes bone breaking, skull cracking slippery. Because we care about our skilled craftsmen and do not want them to face the dangers accompanied with slippery surfaces, our facility closes.

The Sky is Falling – Technically yes and no. When the rate of falling white excrement increases dramatically as it often does during a Nor’easter, the resulting appearance is that the sky is falling. While technically not true, the resulting drop in visibility makes it difficult to go anywhere and can make one believe that indeed the sky is falling. Since our employees cannot find their cars to get to work or operate them safely during sky falling situations, our facility closes.

At Cann Printing while we try to never disappoint our customers there are some matters that are out of our control – The sky falling has produced freezing rain covered by white excrement resulting in very slippery surfaces. Today, March 21st is the first full day of Spring, 2018. Thanks goes out to The Weather Channel for giving this storm a name – Toby. You can now blame Toby because our facility is closed. If your job was due today, we apologize and promise we will deliver it tomorrow when Toby leaves!

When your employees stop investigating new resources – the…

Successful B2B sales dictates that there will be phone calls, texts and emails that accompany a company’s marketing efforts by its sales force. Often the gatekeeper of a company or a company with a good phone tree will prevent the messages from ever being heard by the appropriate decision maker.

Is this always smart?

Time is the major factor. By not taking the time to accept a phone call or read a text or email (or your system blocks them altogether) you know your employees are focused. Their tasks most likely can utilize the tools you have already provided to get the job done. By blocking the sales communication of outside companies, you can save that time to increase internal productivity.

However, if you do not keep up with technology today you will be left behind and at the speed of technology changes today this can happen tomorrow. Many companies send employees to trade shows to learn the latest and greatest advantages that technology in a field has to offer. This can get costly quickly, although does provide a chance for employees to have a little paid company time away from the office while learning many options out there in one place, first hand.

There is still the option of hearing what a sales rep who calls has to say. Your screener can probably decide by the confidence in a caller’s voice whether to put the call through to the person that matters. But they still could be causing your company a loss. Letting the call go to the voicemail of the actual user of those services and letting them decide who to see is what you are paying them to do – Continually investigate new resources and technologies to increase efficiency and decrease costs.

A service will most likely never become a true commodity. A great service will become a relationship. But you must listen to its potential first, for it to begin. Answer your phone, read the text or email. You may be surprised, impressed and…even save money!

Printing Projects: Nightmares or Sweet Dreams?

  • February 1, 2018March 15, 2018

Today’s graphic needs have switched dramatically to digital for web needs and electronic communications. If there is an error when the information is originally launched it really is as easy as the proverbial “Can’t you just hit a button and fix that?” (Well, almost…)

But, do your printing needs keep you awake at night?  If you make a mistake on paper, you are making it thousands of times and may have to endure the reprinting nightmare that can cost you your job.

A good printer can help check files and makes sure images are appropriately sized with enough digital power to reproduce properly but is that really enough?

“I sold commercial printing for 19 years for 4 different firms from ’87- ’06. The difference between facilities is dramatic,” says Don McNeill, Account Executive for Cann Printing. “Today, having a relationship with your printer is more important than ever before, especially if the printer knows your company and will help bail you out in a time of need.”

A good salesman is one thing. but a great account executive who truly cares about your business success (as he or she depends on it) can become an integral extension to your marketing and operation teams. When a representative can actually look at materials and help catch mistakes before press time. that rep is an invaluable asset.

Putting ink to paper is not rocket science. And, with digital technology has become increasingly easier to manufacture. What matters most now is the cost effective delivery of the message whether it is the warning label on a new item or a 1,000 item catalog. A stellar account executive that knows your business and may catch even small details that either differ from past works or are incongruous with other printed materials helps make sure your brand is getting the attention to detail it needs. Pricing among printers may vary a few dollars either way but making sure it is correct on the first printing is the key to sweet dreams. Your account executive should know that.

Bill Cann, son of the founder William N. Cann Sr. put it best when he said to me as a young rep starting off 30 years ago “Try never to make the same mistake twice and help your clients sleep at night knowing they gave us the job and it will be beautiful and on time.”

Don McNeill was an Account Executive at Cann Printing from ’87-97 before working for 3 other printing firms and numerous startup businesses. Today he is back as an Account Executive at Cann Printing… where it all began!
